Humanities

The two hour Humanities block is the core of our community day. The humanities, also called “humane letters” in medieval times are a collection of subjects that since ancient times have instrumentally formed the whole person. These subjects include language, history, philosophy, geography, religion, literature and art. When we study the humanities, we are becoming more fully human. This class includes:

  • Each class begins with observing a great piece of art while listening to a piece of classical music.

  • Meaningful discussion about excellent literature.

  • History is present but the class is rooted in appreciating and engaging with the written word.

  • Students will keep a Book of Centuries and a Commonplace book as ways to engage with literature and people/ideas/events in history as they read.

  • This block also includes writing across all subjects areas and a place to orally share written work; sometimes a more formal paper but most often a written narration of the literature.

Afternoon Hour I & II

For Afternoon Hour I, a more academic-leaning class is offered and will include homework.
Classes have included:

  • Nature Study

  • Marvelous Mammals

  • World Cultures & Geography
